Creativity & Creative Freedom
“There is a lot of good for anybody in making almost any kind of art…making art is intensely cathartic and healing and should be enjoyed by everyone, even those who don’t think they will become the next T.S. Eliot or Picasso.” - Alex Gray
In a society where almost everything is standardized, from standardized testing, to standardized thinking, individuality can be easily disregarded.
Fostering individuality and individual thought is what creativity depends on, particularly by forgetting what it is one already knows and being willing to surrender to not knowing what comes next. Thus, there appears a white space to discover freely, to play and seek inwardly what comes of your own creative core.
I have started to make it a habit to carry a small sketchbook with me throughout my day to indulge the flow of my creative core whenever it is called to come out, even if for a momentary minute. Above is a watercolor drawing I did on the go resembling each of us swimming through life like schools of fish yet having our own individual experiences.
Everyone in themselves, is a world of their own who see and experience life uniquely, differently - individually. Why not share that individuality and vision with the world?
Thanks to Leah Guzman, I came to learn about The Sketchbook Project at the Brooklyn Art Library. The Project is the world’s largest library of artists’ books. Best part is that anyone can participate! For a nominal fee you can have a sketchbook mailed to you where you can draw, write, collage, photograph, glue, scrap, do anything you want to it. When you are done, you mail the book back where it becomes part of library and a “worldwide community resource”. There is even an option to digitize the book to have access to it via a digital library.
I have decided to partake in this unique experience and will be sharing what comes from the white space in my mind & soul. I encourage you to order one and play, give your individuality a voice. Forget the comparison and be willing to explore the white space on the page, even if it is just a word.
Word.
